What is the new dish at Panda Express?
When you get take-out at Panda Express, do you often order the same thing each time? Are you tired of their standard Asian cuisine? If so, there’s good news! This week Panda Express introduced an all-new dish to its menu—Moo Goo Gai Pan!
Moo Goo Gai Pan is made with large slices of chicken breast, mushrooms, baby corn, bamboo shoots, and water chestnuts stir-fried in a soy sauce-based sauce and served over brown rice.
The new sauce
It’s spicy, aromatic and a little bit addictive. I think it’s going to be popular, said John Reuter, associate brand manager for Panda Express. The new teriyaki glaze is made from naturally brewed ginger and garlic.
In an online survey of more than 3,000 people by Delish, a subsidiary of Cosmopolitan magazine that focuses on food and entertaining, teriyaki was No. 2 on its list of most-missed fast-food items—behind honey mustard (No. 1) and ahead of coleslaw (No. 3).
After receiving feedback from customers and franchise owners, Panda Express decided to add a teriyaki sauce as one of several new sauces available with entrees. We thought there was an opportunity in our existing lineup where we didn’t have anything similar to what consumers were used to getting at other restaurants, Reuter said.
Teriyaki sauce has been requested quite frequently over time. Teriyaki is also very versatile; you can use it as both a marinade or as a finishing sauce after cooking meat or seafood.
So far, consumer responses have been generally positive. The company will monitor sales closely in order to gauge how successful it will be moving forward.
The new meat
Panda Express, a fast-food Chinese restaurant chain, has recently announced that they will be introducing two new dishes to their menu: honey walnut shrimp and orange chicken. Both of these additions are non-traditional Chinese dishes but seem poised to hit it big with Panda’s core audience.
The decision reflects ongoing shifts in American tastes as well as in trends within the food industry. While most major chains have had trouble keeping up with consumer demands for healthier options, Panda Express has shown no hesitation in incorporating popular alternatives into its recipes.
Consumers want choices, said Shawn Freiberg, president of Yum Brands’ North America division, which owns both KFC and Pizza Hut along with Taco Bell (and thus also owns a stake in Panda). And we want to make sure we’re giving them what they want. This trend is being seen across other industries as well.

Topped with steamed broccoli and served over brown rice
Asian-inspired chicken with broccoli is one of my favorite meals. I’m so excited that Panda Express has added it to their menu as a new, permanent dish. I love how you can customize your plate with different sauces and toppings, so you never have to get bored.
You could even add a veggie side like edamame or crispy wontons for extra flavor and texture—or just go straight for seconds on that crunchy, brown rice (which is my go-to side item).
If Asian food isn’t your thing, don’t worry—Panda Express has plenty of other dishes to try; my husband likes their orange chicken because it reminds him of growing up in China.
